Will The Crown’s Philip have affair?

- By Laura Lambert TV and Radio Reporter

HIS name has been linked with a bevy of beauties over the years – with such rumours always denied.

But Prince Philip’s character looks set to be called into question once again in the next series of The Crown, following comments by the writer of the lavish costume drama.

Peter Morgan suggested that he has not shied away from the theory that the Queen’s husband, played by Matt Smith, had an affair early in their marriage, declaring: ‘Doesn’t everyone in Britain know he had an affair?’ His comments came moments after a tasteless remark about the potential for a storyline about an assassination of a member of the Royal Family.

During a panel discussion about the Netflix programme, journalist Andrew Billen said: ‘You will write, we hope and trust and pray, another 50, bringing us right through to the coronation of King Charles III, we hope.’

Yet Morgan, who insisted he was ‘not interested in the Royal Family,’ quipped: ‘Then the assassination. And then William.’ Morgan was speaking at a Royal Televi- sion Society event about the success of the first ten episodes, which reportedly cost £100 million to make.

Despite remaining tightlipped about the content of the next series, which is thought to be arriving in November, he did confirm that it will cover 1956 to 1964.

In those eight years, incen- diary claims circulated about the Duke of Edinburgh having adulterous relationships with glamorous showgirls, including the British actress Pat Kirkwood and TV personality Katie Boyle.

One such rumour was that he took a mystery woman on to the royal yacht Britannia during an overseas tour.

These were all denied and no evidence was found, but they have continued to be raised in the 60 years since.

The Crown, starring Claire Foy as the Queen, proved hugely popular when it was released on the video streaming service last year.

Morgan has also surprised fans by revealing that the anointing oil used in the Coronation scene was not luxury skin oil but Tesco Finest olive oil from the supermarket near the studio.
