Hotelier’s 999 plea after catching ‘demonic’ killer attacking woman, 22

- By Tom Payne

A HoTELIEr dialled 999 and sobbed ‘He’s eating her’ when she caught a cannibal guest killing a young woman.

Mandy Miles, 50, came across the horrific scene after hearing screams coming from a bedroom.

She unlocked the door to find 34year-old Matthew Williams stabbing Cerys Yemm, 22, with a screwdriver and biting her face.

Likening Williams to a Star Wars villain, Mrs Miles told an inquest yesterday: ‘He looked like Darth Maul. He was red and black.’

Her son Christian challenged him but he refused to stop: ‘He put his head straight back down on her. There was blood dripping from his mouth.’ Mrs Miles, who described Williams as demonic and possessed, shut the door to raise the alarm.

Miss Yemm suffered fatal wounds and Williams died after being Tasered by police. Mrs Miles’s 999 call was played to the jury at the inquest being held into both deaths.

She can be heard weeping as she says: ‘He’s shoving a screwdriver in her face. He’s actually chewing her face. He’s been locked in room seven. I don’t know who he’s hurting.

‘He’s actually eating her. It’s awful. His name is Matthew Williams and he’s in room seven. There was screaming and screaming. It’s awful. I went into the room and he’s killed her. oh my God. Is this real?

‘There’s blood everywhere and it looks like a horror film. He was using the screwdriver and stabbing.’ officers arrived within 14 minutes of the emergency call from the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in Argoed, near Caerphilly, South Wales.

Williams had been released from jail two weeks before the killing on November 6, 2014. He had no supervision or medication for his paranoid schizophrenia despite having been sectioned twice. He was bingeing on drink and drugs.

Mrs Miles told the jury she had spent the past two years trying to get over the horrific incident. She said there was no sign of life from shop worker Miss Yemm when she raised the alarm.

Mrs Miles, who has run the hotel since 2007, said Williams had been sent by Caerphilly Borough Council and he had told her on a booking form he had no mental health issues.

Williams frequently broke rules the council told her to enforce, including against getting drunk in the day and bringing women back.

She said: ‘I wasn’t allowed to evict anyone without a written warning the council said.’ Children aged 15 and 16 were placed at the hotel by social services, along with the homeless and freed criminals.

Williams’s mother Sally Ann told the inquest he had been taken into foster care as a teenager after being caught stealing to buy drugs.

His addiction was ‘set in’ after he returned from a young offenders institute and his mental health deteriorated. She said her son complained ‘the voices were back’ in the days before the killing, adding: ‘He told me his head wasn’t right.’

The inquest at Gwent Coroner’s Court in Newport continues.
