SPFL urge clubs to be alert over security
SPFL clubs have been urged to remain ‘vigilant’ following the attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus ahead of their Champions League quarter-final with Monaco on Tuesday night. Although there is no intelligence to suggest that Scottish football is under any immediate threat, clubs and supporters have been instructed to remain alert. Yesterday, a spokesman for the SPFL said: ‘Whilst Scottish football has been free from such incidents, we continue to encourage clubs to give due consideration to reprehensible events like those we saw this week. ‘Clubs are aware of the need to remain vigilant regarding these activities and to work closely with Police Scotland on player and fan security as a key priority.’ The warnings come in the wake of three roadside explosions which were detonated as the Dortmund team bus left their hotel on the way to the Westfalenstadion. As a result, the quarterfinal was put back to Wednesday with Monaco winning 3-2. The English Premier League have already stated they are taking the threat of terror attacks ‘very seriously’, with an emphasis on extra security precautions. A spokesperson from the SFA said: ‘The Scottish FA is in regular dialogue with Police Scotland and our security plans are under constant review. ‘We routinely talk to all partners ahead of any event and would encourage those attending to be aware of their surroundings and be vigilant.’ Police Scotland also encourage supporters to report any suspicious activity immediately. Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins said: ‘Police Scotland is committed to keeping people safe and we review policing plans around major events, including sporting fixtures. ‘We frequently liaise with the Scottish Football Association and clubs to address concerns on a local or national basis. ‘There is absolutely no intelligence or assessment to suggest Scotland is going to be the target of a terrorist attack.’
