CITY PLOT MOVE FOR ATLETICO’S GRIEZMANN

- By SAM CUNNINGHAM

MANCHESTER CITY have placed Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann among their top summer transfer targets. Pep Guardiola is lining up a move to beat rivals Manchester United to Griezmann’s signature and add to the firepower of Gabriel Jesus for next season. Guardiola has attempted to transform Sergio Aguero into a more all-round striker but, with the Argentine’s future in doubt, Griezmann is considered a better option. Top scorer at Euro 2016, the 26-year-old Frenchman has fired 26 goals in 50 games for club and country this season and is one of the most sought-after players in European football. He signed a new contract with Atletico last June that runs until 2021 — and it is expected to take a bid of £75million to land him. United boss Jose Mourinho will press ahead with plans to secure a deal for the player, who has admitted he would like to play alongside France team-mate Paul Pogba, but City present a real challenge to United’s hopes. Jesus, meanwhile, could make a shock comeback in City’s FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal tomorrow — just 10 weeks after breaking a bone in his foot. The Brazil star was expected to miss the rest of the season after having surgery on the injury. But the 20-year-old trained yesterday and will travel to Wembley with the City squad. Guardiola said: ‘He’s much, much better. We’re so happy he’s back. He had all of Europe in his hands and he came to join us. We cannot forget that.’
