Labour boss is ‘a danger to the Union’

- By Michael Blackley Scottish Political Editor

LABOUR’S leader was branded a ‘clear and present danger to the Union’ ahead of his first visit to Scotland since the General Election was called.

Jermey Corbyn is today due to plead with trade union members at the STUC conference not to desert his party as he desperately tries to prevent a wipeout in Scotland which could cost him his job.

Speaking at the same event in Aviemore, Nicola Sturgeon will indicate there is no longer any point voting Labour in Scotland by insisting the General Election is a ‘two-horse race’ between the SNP and the Tories.

Ahead of Mr Corbyn’s visit, the Tories yesterday published a dossier which they say provides proof he cannot be trusted with the Union. It highlights how Mr Corbyn recently said he was ‘absolutely fine’ with the idea of another independence referendum, didn’t bother campaigning for a No vote in 2014 because he was ‘doing stuff’ in London, refused to call himself a Unionist and has been gushing in his praise of the ‘brilliant’ Miss Sturgeon.

Scottish Conservative deputy leader Jackson Carlaw said: ‘The bottom line is simple – Jeremy Corbyn is a clear and present danger to the Union.’

He added: ‘It all points to one clear fact: Mr Corbyn would sell pro-UK Scots down the river in a heart beat.

‘Nicola Sturgeon is trying to use this election to push ever harder for a second referendum on independence. Under Jeremy Corbyn, Labour would simply roll over and let her do so.’

The First Minister was due to be the only political leader speaking at the STUC conference, which begins today. Mr Corbyn’s name was added to the programme after Theresa May called the snap election.

The SNP and Labour leaders are both expected to appeal to the Left by attacking the Tories. But Miss Sturgeon will attempt to woo a traditionally Labour-dominated audience by telling delegates that voting Labour will let in more Tory MPs in Scotland.

She will say: ‘The election in Scotland is a two-horse race between the SNP and hard-line Tories.’

She will claim that the Tories are using the election to ‘crush’ opposition, and will say that ‘the more Tory MPs there are, the heavier the price Scotland will pay’.

Mr Corbyn is expected to highlight a series of Left-wing pledges to the unions, including a £10 per hour living wage, the repeal of the Trade Union Act, and requiring all companies holding public contracts to recognise the unions. He will say: ‘The choice facing the country is clear. It’s the people versus the powerful.

‘Labour will challenge the rigged system that is holding our country back.’
