Four hurt after van destroys bus stop

- By Lucy Gray

A SCHOOLBOY was among four people injured after a van careered out of control and ploughed into a bus stop.

The vehicle came off the road yesterday morning in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire, as the street became busy with pupils and commuters.

A group of people were waiting at the bus shelter when the white van crashed through it and into a wall on the town’s Kilbowie Road.

The driver and three others, including a 15-year-old boy, were injured and taken to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The teenager was said to be ‘seriously injured’ after he was hit and thrown over a wall from the impact.

And a 42-year-old man who had

been waiting at the bus stop was also seriously hurt.

A 48-year-old woman was found lying at the front of the van and had been ‘carried along’ by the vehicle, according to police. Her injuries were not thought to be serious.

The Renault van, belonging to central heating company Hiflow, was driven by a 52-year-old man who was not believed to be badly hurt.

One onlooker claimed to have seen a woman ‘fly through the air’, while a man was said to be left injured against a fence.

In the aftermath of the smash, a large metal pole could be seen speared through the vehicle’s windscreen, with the shelter completely destroyed.

Police asked witnesses to come forward with any information.

Inspector Adam McKenzie said: ‘I would like to appeal to people who were in the area at the time to contact us.

‘If you saw the van or the incident, please do contact us.’
