Gilchrist stars in Edinburgh late show

- By ROB ROBERTSON

EDINBURGH secured a remarkable victory over the Dragons at Myreside after Grant Gilchrist touched down with the last play of the game. Trailing throughout the match, it stopped the rot of nine defeats in a row. In a stunning turnaround from 17 points down with ten minutes to go, they squeezed home thanks to Gilchrist. Jason Tovey had opened the scoring for the hosts with an early penalty. But on the half-hour, the visitors went ahead with their first attack of the match after winger Pat Howard went over in the corner. Angus O’Brien put over the extras. Two minutes before the interval, he extended the visitors’ lead to 10-3 with a long-range penalty. The Dragons went further ahead just after the break, with full-back Carl Meyer touching down. O’Brien put over the conversion. With Sam Hidalgo-Clyne on for Nathan Fowles, Edinburgh thought they had scored a try through Blair Kinghorn, but it was chalked off by ref Dan Jones. Allan Dell was sinbinned for a no-arms tackle in the build-up. O’Brien extended the Dragons’ lead with a penalty, but they had Charlie Davies yellowcarded for an off-the-ball tackle on Hidalgo Clyne. Minutes later, Kinghorn touched down and Tovey kicked the conversion. Damien Hoyland scored with two minutes left and Tovey added the extras. Dragons’ Nic Cudd was yellow-carded in the last play of the game, which set up a grandstand finish and the Gilchrist try. ‘We had been lacking confidence but that will give us a boost ahead of next week’s game with Glasgow,’ said interim head coach Duncan Hodge. ‘Coming back from such a difficult position shows the spirit we have.’
