My teddy has shared all my joys and grief

-

WheneveR I see a teddy bear on tv’s Bargain hunt, I feel so sad for them. they sit there looking so forlorn, but must once have been loved and treasured by someone. I would not part with my teddy bear for all the tea in China. he was given to me on my second birthday and I called him David. If he could talk, he would have a wealth of tales from his 80 years with me! My father died when I was two-and-ahalf, so he was a great comfort to me when I was evacuated to Devon when the war broke out. My mother decided she had no reason to stay in London, so she moved to Devon where we lived in a little village called Morchard Bishop. We children used to visit the American tank regiment, which was camped in one of the fields. the soldiers were always kind to us and gave us chewing gum and tins of coffee. David received a lot of amused attention from them when I dressed him up and pushed him in my doll’s pram to pay a visit. When I was 12, my mother died, too, so my teddy now became not only my brother and sister, but my mother and father, providing me with much needed comfort. I was moved from pillar to post until I was 17, when I took myself off to London to make a life for myself — and, of course, David came, too! After marrying and having our children, my husband and I decided to move back down to Devon. David was now loved by our children and even taken by my daughter to a youth club, where he rode around on a carnival float called the toy shop. he now sits in our bedroom wearing a romper suit worn by my son as a baby — and after being played with and loved by my grandchildren, he now has nine great-grandchildren to keep happy. I hope he will never appear on Bargain hunt, but will always be treasured by my family after I am no more.
