HENDERSON WANTS LEGENDS HONOURED

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

RANGERS legend Willie Henderson has urged the Scottish Football Hall of Fame to right a staggering oversight by finally honouring Ibrox icons Colin Stein and Willie Johnston. Stein scored once and Johnston became the only Scottish player to score twice in a European final as Rangers beat Moscow Dynamo 3-2 to lift the 1972 European Cup Winners’ Cup in Barcelona 45 years ago today. Henderson remains baffled that those goalscoring heroes of the Nou Camp have still not been inducted at Hampden. In another bizarre anomaly, three members of the Lisbon Lions — Jim Craig, John Clark and Willie Wallace — have also yet to be admitted to the SFA’s Hall of Fame. Henderson believes it is high time these giants were given the recognition they deserve. ‘When you think how few times a European trophy has been brought to Scotland, then Colin Stein and Willie Johnston should be in the Hall of Fame,’ said Henderson. ‘Those boys not only scored the goals that won the European Cup Winners’ Cup, but they were good players for Scotland and great players for Glasgow Rangers. ‘There’s definitely a case for them to be included. ‘It also seems ridiculous that 50 years after winning the European Cup, three of the Lisbon Lions aren’t in the Hall of Fame. ‘That was a huge event for Celtic but also for Scotland. ‘I have enormous respect for their achievements. ‘Any honour given to them — or to the Rangers team which was successful in 1972 — would be well deserved because it might never happen again.’ The 73-year-old added: ‘Unfortunately, all of Scottish football’s best years seem to be in the past and I think it will be like that for a long time. ‘Our clubs can’t compete with the money on offer down south or abroad.’
