Judy: I wrote book to show I am not a pushy parent

- By Robert Fairburn

SHE’S known as the aggressive mother of tennis’s World No1 Andy Murray and is often pictured baring her teeth or pumping her fists at the courtside.

But Judy Murray is now trying to redress the balance in her first autobiography and prove she is not a ‘pushy parent’.

The 57-year-old from Dunblane, Perthshire – who is to be made an OBE for services to tennis, women in sport and charity – said the general attitude that she is ‘a little bit crazy’ is unfair.

And she hopes the success of Andy, 30, and his doubles champion brother Jamie, 31, will pave the way for more Scottish sports stars.

Writing in her book, Knowing the Score: My Family and Our Tennis Story, the former coach also tells of the struggle she has had helping her sons to the top of the sport.

Speaking at the Borders Book Festival in Melrose, Roxburghshire, at the weekend, Miss Murray said she had always been portrayed as ‘a pushy parent trying to succeed as a woman in a man’s world and should not be as ambitious’.

She added: ‘I tried to shrug it off by saying to myself the people who know me know I am not like that.

‘I am perfectly normal but just coping in a stressful situation. I am just doing what I have done for years.’
