50 films children must watch by age of 11
WE all have a favourite film from childhood that we insist our own offspring simply must see – but did yours make the official list?
Mary Poppins, the BFG and Oliver have been named among the 50 movies children should watch before they grow up. Industry experts looked at how films such as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory benefit children intellectually and emotionally, as well as their ‘nostalgia factor’.
Education charity Into Film launched the Must See Movies Before You Grow Up campaign, which will see all 50 films distributed by retailers this summer so children can enjoy them before turning 11. Campaign ambassador, TV presenter Denise Van Outen, said: ‘I’m certain film’s ability to take us to far-off places and other worlds helps children develop empathy and imagination.’
