Labour devotees spread ‘fake news’

-

SUPPORTERS of Jeremy Corbyn were last night accused of spreading ‘fake news’ about the Grenfell Tower blaze.

Skwawkbox, a far-left blog with ties to Mr Corbyn, claimed the Government had banned the media from reporting the true number of lives lost, and that multiple sources had confirmed reports about the death toll being much higher.

It suggested the government imposed a D-notice (an extremely rare Defence and Security Media Advisory Notice, used for military secrets) on the story to block the truth.

No such order was ever issued, which the site later admitted, but by that point the story had been shared thousands of times on social media, with many users saying it must be true.

The controversy could see the blog’s founder, an office worker based in the north of England, brought before an ongoing parliamentary inquiry into ‘fake news’.

It comes after Pop star Lily Allen fuelled conspiracy theories after claiming the true death toll was being ‘downplayed’ by the media.
