Mundell: Scots Tory campaign was best

-

SCOTTISH Secretary David Mundell has heaped pressure on Theresa May by declaring it’s ‘self-evident’ it ‘wasn’t a successful campaign’ for the Tories south of the Border.

Amid growing concerns in the party about Mrs May’s leadership, Cabinet member Mr Mundell criticised the poll campaign just hours after the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, said it should have focused more on the economy.

Mr Mundell said things had been more successful in Scotland, where Ruth Davidson’s party ‘fought our own campaign’.

He also urged the Prime Minister not to give extra funding to Northern Ireland at the expense of Scotland as part of a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday Politics Scotland show, Mr Mundell said: ‘It is self-evident that in England and Wales it wasn’t a successful election campaign. We lost seats compared to the position in Scotland, where we picked up those 12 additional seats.

‘What I was pleased about... is that our campaign in Scotland was very successful because we focused directly on the issues which were of most concern to people.’
