Travel the world . . . and get a better job

TRAVELLING the world can make you more employable as the skills you pick up visiting various countries can boost your CV, according to a report published yesterday.

Many people fear that taking time out to travel may impact on their career – but the research reveals it can pay dividends as more than 80 per cent of bosses say it makes job candidates more employable.

According to the study, almost two thirds (62 per cent) of people who have travelled say their experiences helped them understand what they wanted to do with their life and more than half (51 per cent) said it helped them figure out what they wanted to do professionally.

Among the top reasons people believe that travel aids employability are that it boosts confidence (38 per cent), increases people skills (37 per cent), helps you adapt to unknown situations (35 per cent) and increases your communications skills (31 per cent).

The research – commissioned among 1,000 adults in nine countries by a travel firm Hostelworld – suggests that more than half (58 per cent) of people aged between 18 and 24 are considering going travelling.
