Just off to work, dear... 400 miles away

- By Stuart MacDonald

SCOTLAND is becoming home to more and more super-commuters who buy a house here but travel to London for work.

London professionals are selling their multi-million-pound properties to live mortgage-free in Scotland because of fears about the English capital’s property market.

Despite facing a gruelling 400-mile-plus commute to work, people who bought homes in London before prices soared are now looking to cash in.

Last year, 25 per cent of buyers of homes north of the Border worth £1million or more were from outside Scotland. It is thought that 2017 will see even higher figures of homeowners from England relocating.

Experts say recent market changes, including stricter lending criteria and buyto-let legislation and the effect of political unrest, have prompted the boom in super commuters.

They can buy larger homes in affluent areas of Scotland such as Edinburgh’s Morningside or Glasgow’s West End outright for half the price of their London homes and bank a big profit.

Juliet Lamb of estate agent Strutt & Parker said: ‘We have a number of people on our books planning to move from London to Edinburgh but continue working in London three days a week.

‘They might work from home or from their company’s Edinburgh office at the start and end of the week.’
