Muir still targeting a double in London

- By LAURA WILLIAMSON

LAURA MUIR remains on track to double up in the 1,500metres and 5,000m at this summer’s World Athletics Championships in London after recovering from a fractured bone in her left foot. The 24-year-old stopped any weight-bearing activities when a scan on June 1 revealed she had suffered a stress fracture in her second metatarsal ‘weeks if not months’ earlier, but began running again on June 16 with no ill effects. Muir will miss next weekend’s British trials in Birmingham as a precaution, but British Athletics director Neil Black’s prediction that she has only ‘a one-per-cent’ chance of doubling up at London 2017 appears wide of the mark. The Scot has already run the 5,000m qualifying time for the World Championships by smashing the British indoor record and clocking 14mins 49.12seconds in January. Muir has also qualified for the 1,500m in London after winning last season’s Diamond League event. Her coach Andy Young told

Sportsmail: ‘After a month of Laura feeling some tightness in her left foot, she went for a series of scans, which confirmed a healing stress fracture of the second metatarsal. ‘It appears this had happened a number of weeks if not months previously but, as Laura had been training normally and without pain, we had not realised. ‘Laura resumed running pain-free on June 16 and the following week returned to the track, which, likewise, was immediately straight back on a world-class pace. ‘With such a short lay-off and training progressing so well, Laura should be able to compete for a medal in the 5,000m as well as the 1,500m in London.’
