Way cleared for Cable to lead Liberal Democrats

VINCE Cable is set to be crowned Liberal Democrat leader after all the other candidates ruled themselves out.

Sir Ed Davey, who had been expected to stand, said yesterday that he will not challenge the former business secretary.

Nominations for the contest close on July 20 and Sir Vince, 74, is expected to use his high profile to unite the party as a caretaker leader.

Deputy leader and East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson, who at 37 is half his age, was the favourite. But the former equalities minister ruled herself out last week. Writing on the Liberal Democrat Voice website Sir Ed said he decided not to stand after a camping trip with his wife Emily and children John and Ellie.

‘I’ve come back to Westminster more determined than ever to campaign hard for the party Emily and I both love, but not to campaign to lead the party at this moment,’ he said.

The Lib Dem home affairs spokesman added: ‘Our joy this weekend was seeing our two children play together.

‘And when you understand that John (aged nine) is severely disabled, you will appreciate that seeing our three-year-old daughter make him laugh is quite special.’

Reacting to the news, Sir Vince tweeted: ‘Very much admire and respect what my friend and colleague has said today.’
