Day he spilt milk over Theresa’s £4,000 silk suit

SHE is fiercely proud of her fashion sense, opting for stylish outfits with rather hefty price tags. So perhaps Andrew Marr should have taken a bit more care when he was serving Theresa May a cup of coffee following a rather grumpy interview on his Sunday politics show.

The broadcaster has revealed how he enraged the then home secretary when he managed to soak her £4,000 silk trouser suit in two pints of milk.

He told an audience at the Chalke Valley History Festival: ‘We had a very, very tetchy interview... She was quite clearly cross.’

Following the show, he invited his guests to breakfast. He said: ‘She was wearing an absolutely beautiful silk trouser suit and she sat across the table from me. I said, “Home Secretary, would you like some coffee?” and she said yes, she’d like some coffee. So I poured her some coffee and then I said, “Would you like some milk with that coffee?” We had a huge two-pint jar of milk – and you can see what is coming.

‘I clipped the jar with my hand and I doused her from nipples to knees in cold milk. She was mortified and aghast and very, very angry.’ Another guest confirmed the suit’s cost. Mrs May ignored Marr’s follow-up apologies but she soon saw the funny side.

Referring to the stroke he suffered weeks later in January 2013, Marr said: ‘I was in hospital and almost the first letter I got was from Theresa May saying, “Dear Andrew, I do hope you’re back on television soon – whatever that might do to my wardrobe”.’
