MISSING . . . and FOUND!

-

THE DAILY MAIL offers readers a unique opportunity to re-establish contact with long-lost relatives and friends. Each week, MONICA PORTER features the story of someone trying to find a missing loved one, as well as a tale of people reunited. This column is produced in conjunction with the voluntary tracing service Searching For A Memory, run by Gill and John Whitley. KAREN MATTHEWMAN writes: ‘My friends Anita and Brenda and I are looking for Enid (nee Lownes).

‘We all worked together at ladies’ hairdressers Maison Joy in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, in the Sixties and Seventies.

‘Enid was a brilliant stylist, winning many competitions with Anita as her model (see photo, Enid is on the right).

‘When I joined Maison Joy as a 16-year-old apprentice, it was a very busy place. The business was owned by Joy Quantock, who worked there two days a week.

‘Sometime in the Seventies, Enid went to Australia to work and on her return she married and had two boys. She eventually moved up north somewhere.

‘As well as working together, we were friends and socialised a lot. Anita, Enid and Brenda went on holidays together.

‘On Joy’s retirement, Anita took over the business and ran it for many years. Brenda and her husband had three children and are now the proud grandparents of a healthy brood. They live on Canvey Island.

‘I married, had two boys and, aged 35, went back to school, eventually emerging with a BA in history.

‘My husband and I lived for a time in Spain, and on our return we, too, settled on Canvey Island.

‘Last year, Brenda, Anita and I got together for Anita’s 70th birthday. We now meet regularly and enjoy re-living our youthful days.

‘It would be really special if we could find Enid to complete the circle of friendship begun all those years ago.’ IN APRIL, Ray Aggio of Hitchin in Hertfordshire wrote regarding his old school in Edmonton, North London: ‘I am sending you a photo of the Huxley Junior School football team in the 1957-58 season, to which I belonged. ‘We won the Edmonton Schools’ Under-11 trophy and I’d like to trace as many team members as possible, as it is coming up to 60 years since that memorable season.

‘In the photo I am in the front row, third from left. I’ve already contacted one of the players, Roy Webb (kneeling at far right in the front row), and I remember the names of all the others except one: John Murphy, Cliff Woor, Barry Kitteridge, Michael Stephenson, David Loman, Stephen Smith, Paul Williams, Roy Macrow and Neal Wilkins.

‘On leaving school in 1962, I joined Wolverhampton Wanderers and played professional football for 17 years.’

There was a good response from Ray’s schooldays. Grahame Roberts emails: ‘My deceased partner’s uncle, Brian Mitchell, is front row second from left, so is the unnamed person.

‘His eyes lit up when I showed him the photo. With a perfect record of 22 wins, he says it was a fantastic group of players. Brian is well and still lives in Edmonton. He passes on hearty best wishes to Ray and the team, as well as his condolences to the families of deceased players.’

Barry Kitteridge’s widow Sally told us he died in 2011: ‘He suffered with multiple sclerosis for years after it ended his West Ham football career early,’ she said.
