KNACKERED MOTHERS’ WINE CLUB
BARGAIN OF THE WEEK Tapa Roja Old Vines Monastrell 2015, £7 (normally £9), M&S
SUPER Spanish red from a region called Yecla in the southeast corner of Spain, this is made from the Monastrell grape, known as Mourvedre in France. Rich and mellow with lots of juicy black fruits and plenty of oomph, even though it’s not been anywhere near an oak barrel.
WHITE WINE
Dragon Hills Pinot Grigio 2016, £8.99, Virgin Wines IF YOU’RE throwing a party, picking the right wine can cause headaches even before it’s begun. You need a crowd pleaser, but you don’t want a wine so boring no one even notices it. A good quality/value Italian white like this is just the ticket; crisp and fresh with soft apple and pear flavours. Talking point? It’s from Romania.
FOOD PAIRING: Salty snacks.
RED WINE Boya Pinot Noir 2015, £7.19 (mix six price), Majestic
WITH mountains on one side and ocean on the other, there are pockets of vineyards in Chile that benefit from just the right sort of cool climate that Pinot Noir grapes love. This one’s from a particularly good spot, the Leyda Valley near the coast, bringing out Pinot’s gorgeous raspberry character and a touch of spice. FOOD PAIRING: Lamb chops.
ROSE WINE Vinalba Malbec Rose 2016, £8.50, Morrisons
MALBEC might be Argentina’s most famous red wine, but this is what it looks like in pink. The colour is bright, the flavours bold with redcurrants and raspberries. With more punch than your average Provence rose, it’s perfect barbecue wine.
FOOD PAIRING: Grilled chicken
