HENDRY THE HERO IN FRANTIC FINISH

- GEORGE GRANT at Stark’s Park

A LATE header from Jack Hendry gave Neil McCann victory in his first match as full-time Dundee manager. Fellow new recruit Sofien Moussa sprung from the bench to kick-start an incredible finish with the opener seven minutes from time. However, Lewis Vaughan’s equaliser gave Barry Smith’s League One side hope of turning the tie on its head before Hendry crashed into a sea of bodies to bravely head in the decisive goal in the 90th minute. McCann admitted he had no idea who had scored the winning goal, saying: ‘Big Jack Hendry is claiming it, but Faissal El Bakhtaoui is saying it came off his back. I don’t care because it showed a lot of desire for the players to go in there. ‘There’s loads to work on. There’s loads I’m disappointed with, in terms of how we played. ‘Everything we’ve done in pre-season is geared towards winning. You get rewarded if you win, even games in training. I was pleased they took the ball back and didn’t feel sorry for themselves after the equaliser. ‘It was get up the park and go for the winner.’ Rovers threatened with shots from Vaughan and Liam Buchanan, but, on both occasions, Scott Bain was equal to the task. Randy Wolters came closest to making a breakthrough before the break, but his drive hammered back off the goal frame to the relief of Raith. Substitute Moussa kicked off an amazing finale with the opener seven minutes from time as he swivelled on a Scott Allan free-kick to score. However, penalties loomed when Vaughan swept in the equaliser five minutes later, only for Hendry to nod in the winner with seconds left.
