How sunny Lorraine lost her inner smile
FOR more than 30 years she has been the undisputed Queen of breakfast television, greeting viewers with a sunny smile each morning.
But Lorraine Kelly has revealed that last year she was plunged into the depths of misery, without knowing why.
‘I lost my mojo,’ said the 57-yearold star. ‘I kept thinking: “Hang on a minute, I’ve got a brilliant job and, more importantly, I’ve got a great family and pals. What’s wrong with me?”’
Eventually she turned to her close friend and TV colleague Dr Hilary Jones for help. He said her symptoms were classic signs of the menopause and recommended that she use HRT (hormone replacement therapy) patches, which took effect within weeks. ‘It was just that my hormones were all over the place,’ said Miss Kelly, who appeared to be comforting herself by wearing slippers to present her show yesterday – until she revealed they were a new kind of ‘fashion sandal’.
She added: ‘It’s like when you’re pregnant and you find yourself sobbing at adverts, which is what I used to do. Like any woman of my age, I was – and am – going through the menopause.’
She did not confide in her husband of 25 years, Steve Smith, nor her daughter Rosie, 23.
‘I’m good at hiding things,’ she told Closer magazine. ‘I tend to plaster a smile on and just get on with it.’
