MOTHERWELL TO WELCOME REFUGEES

-

MOTHERWELL fans have invited a group of 40 Syrian refugees to watch their side take on Berwick Rangers this Saturday. The Well Society — the supporter group which own a majority stake in the Fir Park outfit — will host a group now living in Lanarkshire after fleeing the brutal war currently ravaging their homeland when the Steelmen round off their Betfred Cup group-stage fixtures. Well Society board member Jason Henderson said: ‘We want to give them the opportunity to enjoy a day out at Fir Park on Saturday, take in the experience of a cup tie in Scotland, and with any luck, cheer the Steelmen on to victory.’ DIEGO MARADONA has backed the introduction of video assistant referees despite admitting the system would have seen his ‘Hand of God’ goal against England at the 1986 World Cup ruled out. ‘That goal wouldn’t have stood if technology had been around,’ he said. FORMER Scotland international defender Phil Bardsley has signed a two-year contract at Burnley after moving from Premier League rivals Stoke City in a £2million deal. ‘There’s still fire in the belly to achieve things in football and what a great chance,’ he said after arriving at Turf Moor. AJAX midfielder Abdelhak Nouri has come out of intensive care almost three weeks after he collapsed during a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen. The 20-year-old’s club said in a statement on behalf of his family that he is no longer in an induced coma.
