Bed bug horror as family’s hotel room is infested
IT WAS supposed to be a relaxing family holiday to the Spanish sunshine island of Menorca.
But a Scots couple and their two children ended up covered in itchy insect bites after their hotel turned out to be infested by bed bugs.
Liam Edmonds and Laura Docherty found dozens of the blood-sucking insects living in the mattresses and frames of their beds.
The couple, from Edinburgh, were covered in bites which have cost them around £80 so far to treat. The family, who are due to fly home this weekend, were moved to a different apartment in the same complex. Holiday firm Jet2 has apologised and said their original apartment had now been fumigated.
Miss Docherty said they found the bugs while staying at Sol Parc Apartments in Son Parc. The family had to disinfect all of their clothes and had to be given an injection and medication from doctors.
On Tuesday, she wrote online: ‘Jet2, absolute disgrace. The last week of holiday we have all been itchy thinking it’s a reaction to something. Looked online and our bites looked like bed bugs bites so we pulled the covers back and saw loads of bed bugs. We are all itchy and painful.
‘We have two small children with us Worst holiday ever.’
Yesterday she posted an update, adding: ‘Had to ask to get our clothes disinfected. Went to the doctor and my partner and I had to get an injection and have cream and tablets. The boys have medicine and cream. I feel like I’m in a nightmare.’
Bed bugs live in cracks and crevices in and around beds and bite to feed on blood. They do not spread disease but some people suffer a reaction to bites.
Mr Edmonds, 36, also shared an image showing his arm covered in bites on the Jet2 Facebook page, prompting the company to say they would look into it.
A Jet2holidays spokesman said: ‘We are very sorry to hear about Mr Edmonds’ and Miss Docherty’s experience. This has been an isolated incident, confined to one room, which the hotel has fumigated.’
