I’d rather be a mum than just a friend to my sons

-

I CAN’T believe there are women who don’t want to be called ‘Mum’ by their children because it makes them feel old (Mail). What warped vanity! Their excuse is that they want to be their children’s ‘friend’. My three adult sons, who have families of their own, have always chosen their own friends and sometimes these people have come and gone from their lives as they’ve moved on to other things and other interests. I will be their mum when their old friends have fallen by the wayside and new friends have arrived. I’m honoured that these three lovely, handsome men still call me Mum. I’d be heartbroken if my sons relegated me to the level of a mate. Friendship is so often transient, but being Mum is for life. As for thinking about my age . . . life is too full for that nonsense. ANTOINETTE FOERS, Sheffield. THE look of pure happiness and love when my friend’s adopted child calls her Mummy is a joy to see. Small wonder I found this article bewildering.

M. FALZON, Swinton, Gtr Manchester. I LOVE the fact that only two people in this world can call me Mum. It’s an honour, I am proud to be their mum, so why would I stop them? The women in the article have a skewed view of motherhood.

J. BASSETT, Lee-on-the-Solent, Hants. THE word ‘mother’ represents love and protection. The world is heading for disaster if it becomes a dirty word.

DIANNE CORE, York. SURELY the most beautiful name in the world is ‘Mum’.

JANE MOLONEY, Gerrards Cross, Bucks.
