Anger after Tories end suspension of trolling councillors

- By Rachel Watson Deputy Scottish Political Editor

TWO Tory councillors who were suspended by the party after posting offensive messages online have been reinstated.

Alastair Majury and Robert Davies were elected as Stirling councillors in May, but within days of the election they faced disciplinary action from Tory bosses.

The suspensions were prompted after it emerged Mr Majury was behind a Twitter account which likened Scottish Nationalists to the Nazis.

Mr Davies, meanwhile, was revealed to have tweeted alleged racist jokes.

Now, only three months after being suspended by Conservative chiefs, both have been reinstated, with the party insisting they had offered ‘unreserved apologies’.

But opponents have hit out at the Tories, accusing Ruth Davidson of being a ‘hypocrite’ after allowing her own colleagues to return to the party despite condemning ‘racism, sexism and other unacceptable behaviour’ from others.

Dunblane and Bridge of Allan councillor Mr Majury was behind an account which tweeted in 2012: ‘Why is the Catholic Church against birth control? Because they’ll run out of children to molest.’

Another message said: ‘They are using Nazi as an insult (which it is) rather than as an accurate description which it is for Snats [the SNP].’

Forth and Endrick councillor Mr Davies posted tweets which appeared to compare black people to cannibals.

Nationalist MSP James Dornan said: ‘Ruth Davidson is a hypocrite – she is keen to call out racism, sexism and other unacceptable behaviour, except when her own colleagues are the guilty ones.

‘But this issue goes beyond mere hypocrisy, and exposes the ugly reality of Davidson’s Tories.’

A spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives said: ‘Having served a suspension both councillors have been readmitted to the party after offering unreserved apologies for any offence caused.

‘It has been made abundantly clear that behaviour like this will not be tolerated in future.’
