How to treat a hero

-

IT WAS quite right that the hero policeman who shot dead four terrorists in Cambrils received a round of applause from his colleagues (Mail). Can you imagine what would have happened in Britain?

Most likely the officer would have been removed immediately from duty and his firearm taken for forensic investigation.

Debriefed as to why he discharged his firearm in a public place, he would be put on extended leave.

With his Police Federation representative, he would have to prepare his defence for when he would be dragged in front of the Independent Police Complaints Commission or even criminal court.

Why do politicians and the authorities put restrictions on brave officers at the sharp end of policing? roBert W. BarneS,

Martin SHarP, london Se2. EXTRA controls over van hire won’t stop terrorist attacks. You can easily buy a vehicle from the classified ads, an auction or the internet for very little. Failing that, as they have done in the past, the terrorists can just steal one. alBert roY, london e3.
