Has Prince Charles’s popularity been hit by the backlash over Diana?

-

THE popularity of Charles and Camilla has taken a downturn (Mail), thanks to the outpourings over the 20th anniversary of the death of the Princess of Wales. No one would deny the good Diana did for the world and the love she received in return, but we don’t hear about the thousands of young people who feel gratitude to Charles for all the work carried out by the Prince’s Trust. Camilla attends royal engagements and brightens up the lives of many. I follow the lead of William and Harry who have forgiven their father and stepmother and have a good relationship with them. LIZ OWEN, Gillingham, Dorset. PRINCE Charles betrayed Diana with Camilla and so should do the honourable thing and leave the path to the throne to William and Kate. Charles should step aside, like Edward and Mrs Simpson did, and forfeit the

title. The Royals should be ashamed of the way Diana was treated. There is still no statue of her in Kensington Palace gardens where people can pay their respects.

CHRIS SNOW, Skegness, lincs. WHEN Charles becomes king, his wife Camilla should of course be queen and I will happily accept her as such. PAMElA J. PREECE, Shepton Mallet, Somerset. I ATTENDED the Sandringham Flower Show, where Charles and Camilla spent two hours visiting the displays and happily chatting and shaking hands. The waiting crowds were excited to see them and Camilla engaged easily with young and old alike. A decline in the popularity of Prince Charles? Not as far as I’m concerned.

RICHARD PARR, King’s lynn, Norfolk. I HAVE met Camilla twice and she is well spoken and charming, but I still think that the next generation to become king and queen must be William and Kate. Unlike the other Royals, they would be ready to sit at the bedsides of sick children. DEBORAH JUDD, Bracknell, Berks. IT’S high time we recognised what an amazing man Prince Charles is. It can’t be easy to be vilified and have the strength of character to rise above it all. Of course he has his faults, but he has never deigned to answer the endless criticisms heaped on him. It is easy to see how he has become portrayed as a villain. Diana was a wonderful mother and a compassionate human being, but that’s not the complete story. We cannot begin to understand what life in the royal fish bowl must be like. Charles and Camilla deserve our support.

MARlENE KEMP, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. MONARCHY is not a game show where we get to vote for the youngest and best looking candidate. Charles has worked hard all his life and has the experience and maturity to do a good job. JIll MAGEE, Hinckley, leics.
