KNACKERED MOTHERS’ WINE CLUB
BEST BUYS Chanoine Champagne Brut NV, £17 (normally £19), Tesco
IF YOU’RE after the real thing but still want a bargain, this is on the money. Made by one of the region’s oldest houses, it’s a classic blend of champagne grapes — chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier — and tastes like crushed lemon biscuits. Classy.
WHITE WINE Tasca Regaleali Bianco Di Sicilia 2016, £8.99 Mix Six price, Majestic
THIS gorgeous crisp white from Sicily is made of grapes including inzolia, catarratto and chardonnay. Think of lemons and grapefruit peel, pears and apples. A perfect aperitif.
FOOD PAIRING: Salty nuts
RED WINE Melis Bovale 2015, £9.50, The Wine Society
ANOTHER Italian island stuffed with little-known grape varieties is Sardinia. The bovale grape is one of my favourites. Here it has produced a sun-drenched red with big, bold bramble fruit and herbal flavours.
FOOD PAIRING: Gourmet burgers
ROSÉ Rustenberg Petit Verdot Rosé 2016, £8.99, Waitrose
THIS is so bright, it’s practically neon. The flavours are just as out there, with juicy cherry and cranberry. From South Africa’s most famous wine region, Stellenbosch.
FOOD PAIRING: Crab salad
