Rangers close in on Welsh defender John

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

RANGERS are set to complete a team of 11 summer signings as they close in on the capture of Cardiff City’s Declan John. The twice-capped Wales international arrived in Glasgow last night and will have a medical today before sealing a loan move for the

rest of the season. The 22-yearold is out of contract at the end of the campaign and will be looking to clinch a permanent deal at rangers. manager Pedro Caixinha is back in Portugal for a four-day university course, but new director of football mark Allen is in charge of bringing in players before tonight’s midnight transfer deadline. John, who can play full-back, wing-back and as a winger, broke into the Cardiff first team when malky mackay was manager and the club were in the english Premier league. he made 40 appearances for Cardiff and spent time on loan at barnsley and Chesterfield but has not featured competitively since April. Out of the picture under neil Warnock, who admitted John had become ‘stale,’ a move to Glasgow gives the 22-year-old the chance to kick-start his career with first-team football. during a busy summer window, Caixinha has recruited bruno Alves, dalcio, daniel Candeias, ryan Jack, Alfredo morelos, eduardo herrera, Carlos Pena, Fabio Cardoso, Graham dorrans and Aaron nemane. in addition to John, there may yet be a 12th man, with rangers still keen on Jamie Walker. hearts value the 24-year-old attacker at £1million but rangers are unwilling to pay that for a player whose contract expires next summer. rangers have had bids of up to £600,000 rejected for Walker. it is likely hearts will have to decide whether to accept a lower fee now or risk losing him for nothing when he is free to start negotiating a pre-contract with another club in January.
