UFO within 100ft of passenger plane

- By Mike Merritt

A UFO came within 100ft of a passenger plane over Scotland’s biggest city, an official report has revealed.

The incident happened on May 26 and involved an Airbus A320, which can carry around 200 passengers.

A report to the UK Airprox Board, which probes near misses, said the pilot saw an ‘orange light’ above the plane as he was coming into land at Glasgow.

The crew thought it may have been a drone but the identity could not be determined and was officially classed as ‘unknown object’. The board said: ‘The pilot reports the he was approx three nautical miles finals for Runway 23 when the crew spotted an orange light ahead and slightly above, which appeared to be travelling in the opposite direction.

‘The light passed about 100-200ft above their aircraft. They assumed it to be a drone and reported it to air traffic control. There was no time to take avoiding action.’

The report added: ‘The unknown object was seen in the vicinity of an airfield approach path. The board could not determine the identity or proximity of the object.

‘The board considered that the pilot’s estimate of separation, allied to his overall account of the incident portrayed a situation where there was insufficient information to make a sound judgement of risk.’

It said the risk of collision was ‘low’ but the incident was rated category D – where the risk was not determined because of insufficient information available to determine the threat of collision.
