WALTER SMITH XI

PICKED FROM PLAYERS HE WORKED WITH AT CLUB LEVEL

-

‘It is a tough choice,’ says Smith. ‘First, I have not considered Manchester United players because I did not work with them for that long,’ he adds of his four months alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in 2004. ‘I also have a difficulty in not putting such as Durranty (Ian Durrant), Paul (Sturrock) or Davie (Narey) in the team. They would be on the bench.’ Here is the team in a 4-4-2 formation: ANDY GORAM I don’t think I blamed him for a goal in five seasons. He was that consistent. MAURICE MALPAS I know he was a left-back but I am fitting him in here. Great defender, powerful going forward. RICHARD GOUGH Tough, combative and a good player on the ball. TERRY BUTCHER He was so much but, above all, a winner. Forwards would not expect much change from that centre-back pairing. SASA PAPAC Surprise choice, maybe. But he was a smashing footballer who offered more than just defensive soundness. BRIAN LAUDRUP A brilliant player, good attitude, ability to win a game and no bother. GRAEME SOUNESS Another winner. Technically a great, but could raise the standards of those around him. PAUL GASCOIGNE A genius. He could win a game if he was in the mood. You gave him freedom — not instructions. DAVIE COOPER Another wonderful player. Technically brilliant and a great crosser and passer of the ball. ALLY McCOIST He was moving when others stood still. That is why he was in position to score. MARK HATELEY Under-rated by some. A fine centre-forward and more than decent with the ball.
