Just as well, as it spares us a lot of arguing, and they get to have such lovely conversati­ons as they do here — she regales her sweet Highlander with stories of what it’s like to fly in a plane. ‘And they just stay aloft like birds?’ he marvels.

POP SUPERSTAR Mariah’s World, 9pm, 4 Music

AMID the showboatin­g and glamour of Mariah Carey’s reality series, there are glimpses of something deeper: ‘We did not grow up this way,’ says Mariah as, in this first part, she and her nephew chat on a boat that’s bigger than some schools. (Freeview 18, Sky 362, Virgin 337)

WHEN IN ROME Bromans, 9pm, ITV2

‘EIGHT 21st-century lads are transporte­d to the Roman Empire to see if they can cut it as gladiators.’ This reality show sounds like something Alan Partridge might dream up, but it is quite the spectacle. The ‘lads’ are joined for this experience in Roman living by their girlfriend­s (including Nicole, pictured with Brandon).

GOOD SPORTS A League Of Their Own, 9pm, Sky 1

THE joy of this panel show is in the camaraderi­e of host James Corden and the regular panellists and the heights of sheer silliness this allows them to scale. As it returns for series 12, challenges include leaping between moving platforms, 15m up.

COMEDIANS’ CHAT John Bishop: In Conversati­on With David Walliams, 9pm, W

WALLIAMS (pictured with Bishop) is the first guest in a new run, and the show is at its sweetest when Bishop brings Walliams’s proud mum, sitting in the audience, into the conversati­on. There’s a family feeling to the evening in general — two of Bishop’s sons are in the credits, on the production team.

SURVIVAL CHALLENGE Ed Stafford: Left For Dead, 9pm, Discovery

THE ex-British Army man is dropped into the wild and given ten days to reach civilisati­on in this new series. Ed is in Madagascar for the first expedition, followed by a drone that takes some stunning aerial footage of his steadily worsening predicamen­t.
