SNP losing members as 2,000 give up on party

- By Rachel Watson

MEMBERSHIP of the SNP is continuing to decline, figures revealed yesterday.

They show more than 2,000 members have abandoned the party as Nicola Sturgeon continues to feel a backlash over her plans to ‘refresh’ her government.

According to the House of Commons library, SNP membership has slipped to 118,000 from the 120,000 recorded in July last year.

Although the Nationalists still have more members than all the other Holyrood parties, opponents say this shows ‘peak Nat’ has passed.

A Scottish Tory spokesman said: ‘It seems the SNP’s arrogance on the constitution is driving away even those who once regarded it as a party worth being a member of.’

The revelation follows a Scottish Daily Mail poll by Survation which showed that 250,000 people who voted for the SNP at last year’s Holyrood election do not intend to back the party in 2021.

An SNP spokesman said: ‘Less than three years ago, SNP membership stood at 25,000. Today it’s 118,000.’
