Love Actually, he played a chart-topping rock star, but Bill Nighy admits in real life he hates singing in public.

‘When I heard about karaoke, I made a vow: whatever the circumstances, I would never ever, ever, go towards a karaoke machine,’ says Nighy, 67. ‘Then a friend of mine had a karaoke wedding and they tried to drag me on stage.

‘I put my elbow really violently into another guest. They went: “Oh, my! I see you’re serious.” And I said: “Yeah, I’m really serious.”

‘I’d rather kill myself.’
