Heartbreak for Kelly as 14-year marriage to Travis star is over
IT was viewed as one of the most rock-solid relationships in the entertainment business.
But 14 years after their wedding, Scots actress Kelly Macdonald has split from her rock star husband.
Miss Macdonald disclosed that she and Dougie Payne, bass player with Glasgow band Travis, parted several months ago.
The 41-year-old, who made her name in Trainspotting then starred in movies such as Nanny McPhee as well as US television series Boardwalk Empire, moved back to Glasgow with her husband in 200 after basing themselves in London and New York.
However, Miss Macdonald’s publicist, Craig Bankey, issued a statement over the weekend confirming their marriage was over.
The couple, who married in 2003, have two children – Theodore, four, and nine-year-old Freddie. Mr Bankey said they are united in parenting their children, adding that they ask that their privacy be respected.
Miss Macdonald grew up in Glasgow barely ten minutes’ walk from her future husband, although the two did not meet until 2000.
She was propelled to fame after being handed a flyer advertising a ‘cattle call’ audition for the role of Diane, the teenager who seduces Renton – played by Ewan McGregor – in Danny Boyle’s adaptation of Irvine Welsh bestseller Trainspotting.
Miss Macdonald won the part and Trainspotting was released on her 20th birthday in 1 6. She featured in the sequel, T2: Trainspotting earlier this year, along with McGregor and Robert Carlyle.
More recently, the actress starred in Boardwalk Empire, playing Margaret Thompson, the wife of a Prohibition era crime boss. She appeared in all five series and in 2011 and was nominated for both Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her performances.
This year Miss Macdonald will take part in the big budget epic Holmes and Watson and in animated feature Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.
The couple had seemed happily married and, when interviewed three years ago, the actress was asked: ‘When were you happiest?’ she replied: ‘My wedding day.’
She is set to star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in BBC1 drama The Child In Time, due to be broadcast on September 24.
The star recently spoke of how Hollywood stars had previously looked down on smallscreen colleagues, saying: ‘If you were a film actor doing TV it was seen as a step down. That’s not the case now. It seems films able to get financed these days are often blockbusters, which has allowed TV to catch up.’
