Riddle of elderly couple discovered dead in bungalow

- By Charlotte Thomson

THE mysterious deaths of a pensioner couple are being investigated by police.

Kathleen and William Thomson were found dead in their home on Saturday night.

The grim discovery was made after police were told about concerns for their wellbeing.

Yesterday, it emerged that the couple had survived a blaze at the bungalow six years ago.

The bodies of the married couple, believed to be in their sixties, were thought to have been discovered inside the house in the Northfield area of Aberdeen.

Officers sealed off the property and were continuing their investigations yesterday.

Mrs Thomson’s sister Lynne Ross, of Kemnay in Aberdeenshire, spoke of her loss on Facebook.

She said: ‘One of the saddest days of my life. Lost my sister and brother-in-law. Can’t believe I will never see them again.

‘So sad. RIP you two and be kind to one another, sitting here in tears, shine bright, love you both till we meet again.’

Cator Moyes, who lives two doors away from the couple, said yesterday he helped save Mr Thomson’s life when fire broke out in the bungalow in June 2011.

Firefighters later said the Thomsons were ‘very lucky’ to escape.

Mr Moyes, a retired chef, who was awarded a certificate of recognition from the fire service for his bravery, said: ‘I pulled him out through the window with one of my neighbours.

‘That’s how I got to know him – it’s been a bit of a shock.

‘I spoke to him on Tuesday. He was coming back to the house from the shops and I saw his wife earlier in the week as well. It’s very strange.’

He added: ‘They have quite a few visitors coming back and fore to the house.

‘They were fine, friendly folk. There was never any noise coming from their house or anything like that. They were a happy couple.’ Northfield Church of Scotland minister the Rev Scott Guy said: ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.’

Forensic teams examined the taped-off house over the weekend to help police determine the cause of their deaths.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and the incident is being treated as ‘unexplained’.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘We were made aware of concerns for two people about 9pm on Saturday.

‘We subsequently discovered the bodies of a male and a female. The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained. Enquiries are ongoing.’
