My £15 slippers from Amazon were covered in Nazi swastikas
THEY may look like a pair of standard navy slippers.
But one customer believes an uncomfortable secret is lurking in their soles.
Pensioner Sam Purdie was upset to find that the soles of the £15 slippers he bought online were covered in a pattern that looks like swastikas.
The retired engineer, from Letham, Perth, tried to alert other Amazon customers to the apparent Nazi symbols but claimed his online review of the Jo & Joe brand slippers was censored.
Mr Purdie, 81, added: ‘They looked good on Amazon, but when they arrived they had swastikas all over the soles. You notice the pattern right away. I am not Jewish, but I am old enough to have very unpleasant memories of swastikas. I am a regular customer with Amazon and they usually ask you to review products, so I did.
‘I wrote that I was not happy with my swastika-embroidered slippers and that I certainly won’t be wearing them.
‘They responded saying I had been abusive in my review, but it’s an automated response. I think the fact I had used the word “swastika” upset them. I am still not happy. I am a customer – they should not be dealing with me as if I am a stranger. The slippers should be taken off the market.’
A spokesman for Burnleybased supplier LJ&R Footwear said: ‘This is the first time this has been brought to our attention. This outsole is widely available in China and has not been developed by us. Any resemblance to the sign in question is purely coincidental. It is a honeycomb maze pattern.’
In January, a US shoe firm recalled a boot after a viral photo showed the sole left tiny swastika prints. Bosses said it was an ‘obvious mistake’ by manufacturers in China.
Amazon has been approached for comment.
