Foderingham has a 2020 vision for life in Glasgow

- By STEPHEN McGOWAN

RANGERS goalkeeper Wes Foderingham last night penned a one-year extension to his current contract. The 26-year-old has held down the No 1 jersey since 2015 and has now committed his future to the Ibrox club until May 2020 after revealing he turned down opportunities to leave in the summer. Poised to regain his starting place against Celtic on Saturday after Jak Alnwick was in goal for the Betfred Cup quarterfinal victory over Partick Thistle on Tuesday night, the Englishman recently crashed through the 100 appearances barrier, proclaiming himself happy and settled in Glasgow. ‘I am very happy,’ said Foderingham. ‘Since I joined the club, I have remained the No 1 and I’ve had great times at the football club. I was keen to extend my stay and it made sense for both parties. ‘I am just happy playing my football here. If I am being totally honest, I had options to leave this summer, but in my mind I always wanted to stay at this football club, the club said they wanted to keep me here and I am pleased they did. ‘All the boys here want to be playing in Europe and at the highest level possible — I think I can achieve that at Rangers. ‘I do feel like Glasgow is home now. I have bought a place up here and my girlfriend has recently moved up here as well. I am nice and settled and have no reason to leave.’ Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha believes Foderingham’s best years as a goalkeeper have yet to come, saying: ‘Wes is our No 1 and we are glad that he has signed his agreement with the club. ‘He still isn’t at the age where goalkeepers are usually mature, so he still has room to grow and get that maturity. ‘It is important in modern football to have a goalkeeper who is good at playing with his feet from the back and that is something that is important in our game. ‘We need to keep working with him regarding his decisions in the moments on when to release the ball, or to take a decision to not release it and to compact the team a bit more. ‘But he is a guy who is very safe on the posts, he is very good at one-to-ones and he is getting more confidence, which we can see game by game and also his controlling of crosses. ‘It’s about getting that evolution to get that level of maturity for a goalkeeper to play at such a massive club like Rangers.’
