NOT so long ago, he was so hard-up that he once slept rough near Buckingham Palace.

But now Ed Sheeran is one of Britain’s wealthiest musicians – and is thought to be worth an astonishing £52million.

The singer-songwriter, 26, is certainly living comfortably after paying himself more than £15million last year, according to the latest filed accounts.

The star reported a £17,157,143 turnover for 2016, while his dividend pay of £15.5million is up £10.3 million on the previous year.

He can also expect a bumper pay day from his touring company, Nathan Cable Touring LLP, which is set to publish its accounts in December.

His success means he is one of the country’s wealthiest stars under 30 – and catching up with Adele, who is said to be worth £92million.

A source said: ‘Things are on the up and up for Ed, and is money is only going to shoot up from here.

He’s a very talented boy and has fingers in several other pies. He is also surrounded by a good team to ensure he spends his money wisely, and doesn’t go crazy with it.

‘Ed remains incredibly down to earth and is by no means a lavish spender.’

However, the singer is not afraid of splashing out on property, having built an underground pub for his English home this year – as well as acquiring a sprawling vineyard in the Italian province of Umbria.

Sheeran, whose last album Divide broke all records after securing nine singles in the UK top ten, was also made an MBE in January.

He has topped off a busy year by making a cameo in hit show Game Of Thrones.

Sheeran is worth £52million according to the Sunday Times Under 30 Rich List, and was the wealthiest male musician in the list.

Adele was named as the wealthiest musician under 30 in Britain and Ireland, and the 19th richest singer overall.
