Sturgeon: We need new EU poll
THE case for a second EU referendum is becoming ‘hard to resist’, Nicola Sturgeon said yesterday – as she also claimed to have a mandate to hold another vote on Scottish independence before 2021.
The SNP leader yesterday signalled that she wants to create more constitutional turmoil in Scotland over the next four years.
Her comments came just a day after she admitted that most Scots were ‘scunnered’ with making big political decisions.
In an interview with Sky News, she claimed a second vote on EU membership could be required because people were not given any detail about the consequences of Brexit.
She said this was not yet party policy, but added: ‘I think that argument may well gather real force and become hard to resist in the future. When people voted in the Brexit referendum – and this makes it very different from the independence referendum in Scotland – there was no detail about what people were voting for.’
Questioned on independence, the First Minister told STV News that the SNP ‘won a mandate last year’. She added: ‘I will not consider the timescale until there is a greater clarity about the Brexit talks. I am not going to go any further than that, that’s my position.’
James Kelly of Scottish Labour said: ‘Voters sent Miss Sturgeon a message loud and clear in the general election that they do not want another divisive independence referendum.’
