Saints star Morgan is focused on improving

- By MARK WALKER

HE has already been linked with a big-money move away from St Mirren, but Lewis Morgan believes the lesson dished out to him and his Scotland Under-21 team-mates by England proves he still has a long way to go. Scot Gemmill’s youngsters face Latvia this afternoon in Liepaja after they were clinically outclassed 3-1 by a very strong England team last Friday in Middlesbrough. Scotland’s one bright spot of the chastening evening was Chris Cadden’s goal, which came from a Morgan cross, the Saints youngster very much a leading light in the Paisley side’s push for promotion to the Premiership. That form has seen him linked with a move to both Celtic and Rangers as well as some big English clubs. And Morgan insists he will use this international experience to keep progressing. ‘You could see the quality England have got,’ he said. ‘I was expecting a tough game because most of them are playing in the Premier League every week. ‘I don’t know if they were miles and miles better than us, but I think they were sharper. They were cute and also maybe a bit more tactically aware than us. ‘Every young player aspires to be at the highest level and I am no different. I have good belief about myself and I know I can play against boys of that calibre and still have an impact on the game. ‘Listen, there is no point in listening to the rumours about me because they’ve been done to death, to be honest. I will let other people deal with that and I will concentrate on my football.’ Meanwhile, Gemmill is preparing for a very different match against the Baltic nation today. ‘Playing England away is not really relevant to playing Latvia away,’ he said. ‘We go with determination to get our performance correct because, if we can do that, we know we can get what we want and we’re capable of getting it.’
