Teenager is found guilty of killing dad in pub brawl

- By Gary Fitzpatrick

A TEENAGER has been convicted of killing a young father in a mass brawl outside a pub in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Shaun Woodburn suffered massive head injuries when he fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.

The 30-year-old was taken to hospital but died hours later.

After a 17-day trial at the High Court in Dunfermline, the youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was yesterday found guilty of culpable homicide.

Mr Woodburn had been in a bar in Leith, Edinburgh, with friends. As trouble erupted, Mr Woodburn was part of a group who went outside and as several fights broke out on the street, he was fatally injured.

The jury found that the youth, then 16, assaulted Mr Woodburn, punched him on the head, causing him to strike his head and killed him.

The youth admitted assaulting five other people that night. He will be sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow next month.

Mohammed Zakariyah, 19, who was with the teen that night and has admitted two separate assaults and a breach of the peace, will also be sentenced then.
