Susan Stroman and comic writer Mel Brooks have transformed Young Frankenstein — a mega-flop on Broadway — into a West End success.

The fab actors at the Garrick make it work. They are properly funny, as opposed to just acting funny. Hadley Fraser, Ross Noble, Lesley Joseph, Dianne Pilkington, Summer Strallen, Patrick Clancy and Shuler Hensley are in a comic class of their own.

Some of the gags are prehistoric; but they’re delivered with star-spangled aplomb.

Word of mouth is obviously in good voice, too, because £110,000 worth of tickets were sold on Wednesday, when the reviews were published. And yesterday the take was heading towards the £130,000 mark.
