Roll up! Stars back Mail’s Quids for Kids appeal

- By Tom Kelly, Susie Coen and Laura Lambert

CELEBrITIES have rolled out in support of the Daily Mail’s Quids for Kids Christmas appeal to give seriously ill children a magical experience.

Broadcasters and presenters gave their backing to the scheme to donate old £1 coins to Make-a-Wish UK, which makes dreams come true for youngsters bravely fighting lifethreatening conditions.

The old round pounds can be exchanged at banks and post offices, but by giving them to the Mail’s campaign instead, readers will help some of the 20,000 young people facing gruelling treatment and long periods in hospital.

Broadcaster Dame Joan Bakewell said it offered an ideal solution to the question of what to do with the old round pounds.

The Labour peer, 84, said: ‘This is a great way to dispose of them and manage to do something worthwhile.

‘For those of us who have been wondering, “Oh my goodness, how do we sort this out?” This is the answer.’ Tv presenter Carol Smillie said: ‘We’ve all got pound coins that we spend without thinking on things like a coffee or a bus ticket. What a brilliant way to use them for good.’

Jo Wood, ex wife of rolling Stones guitarist ronnie Wood, said: ‘The Mail’s Quids for Kids campaign is a great idea, it’s lovely. I think anything to help children is important.’

about 450million old £1 coins are still in circulation, despite ceasing to be legal tender yesterday. We are asking readers to give them to Make-a-Wish Foundation UK which has helped children to star in their own films, swim with dolphins and meet their heroes.

The Mail has partnered with Nationwide Building Society, which will take old £1 coins for the charity until December 20.

Hand them to the cashier at any Nationwide branch, saying you wish to give them to the Mail’s Quids For Kids Make-a-Wish Foundation UK appeal.

You can also make extra donations there. and if you don’t have any old pound coins to give, you can donate online, by text message, or by cheque.
