WINTER is a beautiful time of year when, as the nights draw in, streets and cities light up. Watch and admire the sky as it sparkles with fireworks, and admire Irvine’s historic waterfront as it shimmers into life when St Andrew’s Day kicks off the celebratio­ns.

Illuminati­on: Harbour Festival of Light takes place from November 30 to December 3 in the Ayrshire town, and is an event that will brighten venues with atmospheri­c light installati­ons.

Head to The Linthouse at the Scottish Maritime Museum for an extraordin­ary fire show with pulsating colours.

The Light Trail this year will feature the Kelpie maquettes and take you along the waterfront to see brightly lit skiffs racing along River Irvine, as

Head to the capital and get your fill of Christmas cheer at the German Markets, rides and attraction­s, shows, free events and more. Edinburgh’s Christmas will be out in full force from November 17 to January 6 with The Forth1 Big Wheel returning to Princes Street to give you glistening views across the city – but remember to wrap up warm. There will also be an abundance of rides, including the Carousel, Helter Skelter, Balloon Ride, Santa Train, Santa’s Grotto and many more. Glasgow’s Christmas Lights Switch On is a stunning sight.

On November 19, head to the city centre to witness the streets come to life in this much-loved festive event to kick-start the festivitie­s. Or, on December 10, dress up and raise money for charity in the Glasgow Santa Dash 5K.
