My Ascot Champions Day awards
JOCKEY OF THE DAY:
How can you look any further than Frankie Dettori? His double on Persuasive and Cracksman provided the perfect climax to the afternoon.
TRAINER OF THE DAY:
Outscored 2-1 on the day by John Gosden but Aidan O’Brien found a fitting stage to equal the record of 25 Group One wins in a year as Hydrangea won the Fillies & Mares Stakes.
PERFORMANCE:
To win by seven lengths is impressive and Cracksman evoked memories of his great sire Frankel as he ran clear.
FINISH:
Order of St George and Ryan Moore clawing back a two-length deficit at the furlong pole to catch Torcedor and pull off what had looked an unlikely victory in the Long Distance Cup.
DISAPPOINTMENTS:
Harry Angel (Sprint) and Barney Roy (QEII) not showing their best, but some summer form will always crumble at an autumn fixture on soft ground.
PERSEVERANCE:
Jockey Robert Winston almost retired last year but his belief in Librisa Breeze changed his mind. The Champion Sprint was Winston’s first Group One win since 2004.
BIZARRE MOMENT:
Holy water sprayed on the legs of Beat The Bank, who runs for Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, being sent for analysis on order of the stewards. The water did not work as the gelding finished 10th in the QEII Stakes.
