STARTING a business can be exciting, but it helps to get advice first.

The gov.uk website has information about setting up as a sole trader, limited company or partnership, and tells you how to find a local growth hub, offering business advice and guidance on government financial help.

If you start a franchised business, the franchisor should help, too.

Carol Cordiner, the Crolla’s Gelateria franchisee in Aberdeen, offering traditional Italian ice-cream, says: ‘Research what’s involved and, with a franchise, check what business support is offered. Spend time with the franchisors to get a feel of who you’re getting involved with.

‘Crolla’s took me to their other gelaterias, I tasted their products and was given a tour of their factory.’

Director Peter Crolla says: ‘We assist a franchisee in every business aspect and provide training and support.’

Crolla’s is looking for franchisees. The total investment required is £90,000 to £140,000.

Eddie Finnigan, who holds a Select Appointments recruitment franchise in Glasgow, says: ‘I went to several franchise advice seminars before making a decision. I received no specific Scottish government help to set up, but we may apply for funds from Scottish Enterprise to develop our digital marketing.’

The New Start Scotland exhibition in Glasgow on November 1-2 offers free advice from banks, lawyers and accountants, plus Business Gateway, Scotland’s business advice service.
