BURKE’S EYE WAS ON MORE AMID THE MAYHEM

- By KATE McGREAVY

Chris Burke ended five minutes of stoppage-time madness at ibrox by clinching a point for kilmarnock.

But the former rangers player insists the Ayrshire men were disappointed they couldn’t fully capitalise on the ibrox anxiety to claim a victory in the first match of steve Clarke’s reign.

it looked as though Jason holt’s strike just before halftime was going to be enough to claim all three points for rangers, but Burke equalised just seconds after Daniel Candeias missed a penalty and ryan Jack was ordered off.

‘everybody’s a little bit on the edge of their seat because they are not killing the game off,’ said 33-year-old Burke.

‘i think we gave as good as we got. i thought we were terrific, especially the second half. We showed a lot of belief, took a lot of positives from the game and i think in the end we have to be a little bit disappointed we didn’t take the full three points.

‘That’s the way we’re looking at it and that’s the way you have to look at it. That’s the way the manager has set it out: “You need to come into this game thinking you’re going to win because, if you come up short, you might get a point. if you think you’re just going to get a point, you’ll come up short and not get anything”.

‘so we took that on board and i think we showed that today.’

kirk Broadfoot brought down eduardo herrera in the box just before the 90th minute, leaving the referee with no option but to point to the spot.

Candeias stepped up to take the penalty but tempers boiled over on the edge of the box, leading to Jack being sent off for what appeared to be a headbutt on Broadfoot.

referee Alan Muir initially showed Jack a yellow but, after communication with his fourth official, flashed red.

When Candeias finally stepped up, goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald guessed the right way and moments later killie counter-attacked for Burke to tap the ball home at the far post.

‘i thought it was nothing that we didn’t deserve,’ continued Burke. ‘especially second half. rangers had a couple of chances and you had to weather the storm, but i thought we took the game to them second half and could have ended up winning the game.’

The draw takes killie off the foot of the table, and four points from two games suggests the Ayrshire side are heading in the right direction.

‘Obviously we got a great result against Partick Thistle away and we got a great point here against rangers,’ added Burke.

‘Don’t get me wrong, we’re still near the bottom, so we have to make sure we keep climbing and keep taking points.

‘We will have a tough task again at Parkhead on saturday but a lot of teams around about us will not be happy with seeing that result today.’
