- By Dean Herbert

AROUND one in ten women in Scotland is pouring cash into a secret savings fund without telling their partner.

Around 12 per cent of women living north of the Border have a secret account, compared to only 8 per cent of men, say researchers.

Savers aged between 35 and 44 are the most secretive, the study carried out for the Bank of Scotland found, with 12 per cent of this age group admitting to keeping their cash hidden from their other half.

However, eight in ten Scots do not suspect that their partner is secretly saving.

Bank of Scotland director Mike Moran said: ‘It’s great to see people saving, regard- less of whether or not they are saving into a secret savings account.

‘Putting some money away each month is an important part of managing your finances.’

The bank’s findings follow its research in 2013 that estimated the total secret savings stash in the UK is worth £2.1billion.

The typical secret saver keeps between a quarter and a third of their savings hidden from their partner, it was found.

The most recent How Scotland Lives study – carried out by YouGov for the bank – found that resident of Dundee are the most secretive, with one in five building up cash without their partner’s knowledge.

However, people in Fife were exposed as being the most suspicious, with 13 per cent believing their partners have secretly saved money.
